RPR presents: COLISEUM / BLACK HOLE KIDS / YOU'RE WRONG
Time: Friday, May 6 at 9:00pm - May 7 at 12:00am Location: The Bottletree Cafe
Show starts at 9
18+
Tickets are $10
How much change is a band willing to endure in pursuit of a dream? In the case of Coliseum, as much as it takes. In the three years since their second album, No Salvation, the Louisville power trio have changed labels, producers, engineers, and replaced the frenetic breakneck speed of former drummer Chris Maggio with the emphatic rhythmic stomp of Carter Wilson - all in the service of producing the album they always dreamed of. ...That album is House With A Curse, their third full-length and first for Temporary Residence Ltd. For the first time in their nearly decade-long career, the trio play like a singular unit, commanding an agile, indestructible army of enormous riffs grounded by the head-nodding, foot-stomping rhythm section of Wilson and long-time bassist Mike Pascal. Guitarist/vocalist Ryan Patterson's gravel-throated proclamations are more personal than ever, reflecting against himself and projecting to the outside world.
Locals Black Hole Kids and You're Wrong share members and dish out similar styles of hardcore punk with aesthetics ranging from intricate, chaotic, pensive, abrasive, psychedelic, and etc.

RPR presents: BIG FREEDIA: THE QUEEN DIVA OF BOUNCE
Time: Thursday at 9:00pm - April 15 at 12:00am
Location: Bottletree Cafe
18+
Bounce Music is an original urban music rising up from the intimate and fun-loving nature of the New Orleans housing projects which dominate the city's street culture, and Freedia performs a derivative of Bounce reserved for self-proclaimed "Sissies" (a locally used name for biological men with varied and ambiguous sexual identities) that has risen to prominence in recent years and features explicitly gay and cross-dressing musicians and themes. Big Freedia, like other "Sissy" artists, has achieved mainstream success with several New Orleans hit singles such as "Gin in My System" and "Azz Everywhere!" from her albums "An Ha, Oh Yeah" (1999) and "Queen Diva" (2003). Freedia began her musical career almost 15 years ago at the Walter L. Cohen High School in New Orleans, where she was enlisted as choir director from her Sophomore to Senior years. She sees her performance as a Bounce artist as an extension of this work, often interacting in a call and response/teacher and student, fashion with her audiences.
Since 2009 Freedia has begun traveling outside the city regularly with her dancers and live DJ, Rusty Lazer, playing to audiences on the East and West Coast alongside (or onstage with) artists such as Spank Rock, Ninjasonik, Japanther, Monique and many more. Big Freedia has always acted as a mentor for many younger artists and is currently at work on her third album. This year Freedia performed on the West coast with New Orleans band Galactic, recreating her collaboration on the critically-acclaimed 2010 album "Ya-Ka-May", and at North By Northeast alongside Kid Sister, De La Soul and her New Orleans neighbors Quintron and Miss Pussycat. Freedia will be performing at FYFest in Los Angeles soon, and will share the stage with Major Lazer at MusicfestNW in Portland this September. Later appearances are planned for the Windish Agency Showcase at CMJ and Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin.
Location: Bottletree Cafe
3719 3rd Ave. South
Birmingham, AL
Tickets are $10adv / $12dos

DIVE! The Film
Time: Sunday, April 10 · 6:00pm - 7:00pm
Location: Mountain Brook Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall
Every year in America we throw away 96 BILLION lbs of food. That’s 263 MILLION pounds a day. 11 MILLION lbs an hour. 3,000 LBS of a second.
Inspired by a curiosity about our country’s careless habit of sending food straight to landfills, the multi award-winning documentary DIVE! follows filmmaker Jeremy Seifert and friends as they dumpster dive in the back alleys and gated garbage receptacles of Los Angeles’ supermarkets. In the process, they salvage thousands of dollars worth of good, edible food – resulting in an inspiring documentary that is equal parts entertainment, guerilla journalism and call to action.
This documentary is approximately 45 minutes long and is appropriate for all ages. Bring your friends and join us for a rare opportunity to view this compelling film provided by Magic City Harvest

2/15/11
Hope everyone had a wonderful Valentine's Day/Single Awareness Day! I plan on updating the blog soon with new events!
Sunday, February 13, 2011
Hey Y'all
This is my first blog post for "Trending Metro Area" ....HOORAY! I created this blog after I was assigned to make one for one of my undergraduate classes. The assignment was to make a blog about something we love. Regardless of what it is. I immediately thought I would make a poetry blog, because it is something I truly adore. Also, I thought it would be a great forum to publish my own creative works. However, I thought that would have been extremely selfish, because I live in an area that is exploding with so much talent.
Birmingham has so much to offer, but I hear a lot of my friends complain about how they never know about what is going on. I figured the best solution would be to provide a forum giving information/reviews about all the art and music events happening in the Greater Birmingham Area. So bloggers, I welcome you to stay up to date on all the music and art events happening in Birmingham.
I also welcome reviews from you (the bloggers) about the listed art and music events. The only rule I have is, "Keep is classy and not trashy." Please be respectful and use thoughtful words in your reviews. Any reviews that appear to be vindictive or littered with profanity will be deleted. I hate to sound 'lame,' but I do want to respect the artists, and keep the blog clean. Thank you, bloggers!
ENJOY!
